No adult has ever demonstrated a photographic memory under controlled conditions. Eidetic imagery — the thing researchers actually study — is real, but it is brief, it belongs mostly to childhood, and it is not a mental photograph. The extraordinary memories that have been verified are either trained or confined to one narrow kind of material.

Quick answer

Photographic memory and eidetic memory are not the same thing. Eidetic imagery is a measurable effect: a child can still “see” a picture for a short time after it is removed and describes it in the present tense. Summarising a ten-year study of school-age children, Haber wrote that eidetic images are “only available to a small percentage of children 6–12 years old, and are virtually nonexistent in adults”. Photographic memory is the folk version — permanent, perfect, page-sized — and it has never been demonstrated.

The difference the word hides

English search treats photographic memory and eidetic memory as the same query. The research does not. Eidetic imagery has published criteria for telling it apart from an ordinary afterimage and from plain visual memory: the image should survive eye movements, the person should be able to look around while still reporting it, it should be positive rather than reversed, and it should be described in the present tense — as something being seen now, not recalled. Those criteria exist because the effect is subtle and easy to confuse with something else.

What they describe lasts seconds to minutes and covers a single picture. It is a long way from the thing people mean when they say someone has a photographic memory, which is an indexed, permanent archive of pages read once.

The one famous case, and why it stayed alone

In 1970 Nature published a report on a Harvard participant known as Elizabeth, who was described as being able to combine two random-dot patterns seen on different days into a single fused image — a task that appears to require holding a precise dot-by-dot copy in mind. It remains the single most cited piece of evidence for photographic memory.

It also remains the only one. The result has never been replicated, and the participant was never retested by anyone else. A finding that cannot be reproduced and rests on one person who is no longer available for testing is not a demonstration; it is an open question that was left open. By 1979 Haber, who had spent a decade looking for eidetic imagery in children, titled his review of the field “Twenty years of haunting eidetic imagery: where's the ghost?”

Does a photographic memory mean high IQ?

This is the question people most often attach to the topic, and it has a cleaner answer than it looks. There is no verified adult case, so there is nothing to correlate with intelligence in the first place.

And the real childhood phenomenon points the wrong way for the theory. Eidetic imagery is found in a small minority of children between six and twelve and is virtually gone in adults — it fades as reasoning ability develops. An ability that disappears exactly as people get better at thinking is not behaving like a marker of high intelligence.

It also mistakes what an IQ test measures. Reasoning, verbal and numerical problem-solving, working memory and processing speed are about what you can do with information, not how much of it you can store verbatim. Storage capacity and reasoning are different questions, and a score on the IQ scale answers the second one.

What extraordinary memory actually looks like

Two kinds of exceptional memory have been documented properly, and neither one is photographic.

Trained memory. In 1980, researchers reported a participant who raised his digit span from 7 to 79 digits after more than 230 hours of laboratory practice, using a mnemonic system built around running times. Their conclusion was that with an appropriate mnemonic system “there is seemingly no limit to memory performance with practice”. The striking part is how ordinary the starting point was — a span of seven, which is unremarkable. The ability was constructed, in public, over months.

Highly superior autobiographical memory. In 2006 a research team described a woman, AJ, who could be given a date and say what she had been doing and what day of the week it fell on, with accuracy that checked out against records. They were explicit that she was unlike the trained cases: her remembering was “nonstop, uncontrollable, and automatic”, and it dominated her life rather than serving it. Later work investigated more people with the same pattern. It is confined to their own past — it is not a general ability to absorb anything on sight.

Why memory cannot work like a camera

The deeper reason the photographic version fails is that remembering is a reconstruction rather than a playback. The classic demonstration is blunt: people who watched the same film of a car crash gave higher speed estimates when asked how fast the cars were going when they smashed into each other than when asked how fast they hit each other — 40.8 mph against 34.0 mph for the same footage. A single verb changed what they remembered seeing.

A stored photograph would not be editable by a question asked afterwards. Human memory is, routinely, which is a good reason to be careful with confident recollections — and a bad fit for the camera metaphor.

Is photographic memory a form of autism?

No, and the two ideas reached each other through a third one. In savant syndrome, an extraordinary and very narrow skill — calendar calculation, music, drawing a skyline from memory — appears alongside a developmental condition, often but not always autism. It is documented in the clinical literature and it is rare. We cover it separately in what savant syndrome is.

Two things get lost when that becomes “photographic memory is an autism thing”. Savant skills are usually not visual archives at all, and autism is a developmental condition affecting communication and behaviour, not a memory feature. An exceptional memory is not a diagnostic sign, in either direction.

Can you get one?

Not the camera. But the honest version of that wish — remembering more, more reliably — is a real skill with a real evidence base, and the 1980 digit-span study is the proof of concept: an ordinary span became an extraordinary one through a system and a lot of hours. What was trained is the method, not the hardware.

Two adjacent ideas are worth separating from this one. The learning styles claim says people absorb material better in a preferred format, and it has failed direct testing. The left brain and right brain story sorts people by hemisphere, and no such people have been found. Photographic memory belongs to the same family: an appealing account of why some minds seem to work differently, which does not survive being measured.
