The four learning styles people mean are visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic — and the preference is real, while the promise attached to it is not. Being taught in your preferred format has repeatedly failed to improve how much you actually learn. This page sets out the styles, where they came from, what the controlled studies found, and what raises learning instead.
Quick answer
VARK — visual, auditory, reading/writing, kinesthetic — is the best-known set, and a questionnaire will happily tell you which one you are. The claim that has failed testing is the next step: that teaching matched to your style makes you learn more. Reviewers call that the meshing hypothesis, and the experiments designed to test it properly keep coming back null. What does work is a different thing entirely: testing yourself and spreading study over time.
The four learning styles (VARK)
Neil Fleming and Coleen Mills set out the categories in To Improve the Academy in 1992, explicitly as a “catalyst for reflection” — a prompt for teachers and students to think about presentation, not a diagnosis. The four are below, in the terms most questionnaires use.

Two details get lost in the popular version. Most people who complete the questionnaire come out multimodal — a mix, not a type. And the kinesthetic category in the original is about connecting learning to experience and practice, not about needing to move around while you study.
The other model: Kolb's four learning styles
In much of Europe “learning styles” means something else entirely. David Kolb's experiential learning model describes a cycle — concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, active experimentation — and the four styles are positions on that cycle, usually taught as the diverger, assimilator, converger and accommodator, or in Dutch classrooms as the dreamer, thinker, decider and doer. It is a model of how someone moves through a learning cycle rather than of which sense they prefer, and the evidence problem below applies to it in the same way: knowing someone's position on the cycle has not been shown to tell a teacher how to teach them.
What happens when the claim is tested
The claim that matters is not “people have preferences” — they do. It is what Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork named the meshing hypothesis: “instruction is best provided in a format that matches the preferences of the learner”. Reviewing it for Psychological Science in the Public Interest in 2008, they noted the idea's “great influence within the education field” and the “thriving industry” selling tests and workshops built on it — and concluded that credible validation requires a very particular experimental design that almost no study had actually used.
Two studies that used it. Rogowsky, Calhoun and Tallal followed that design in 2015. College-educated adults were assessed for auditory or visual preference, then taught the same non-fiction material either as a digital audiobook or as an e-text. Comprehension was tested immediately and again two weeks later. Matching the format to the preference produced no statistically significant benefit at either point.
Husmann and O'Loughlin took a different angle in 2019, following 426 undergraduate anatomy students. Most of them did not actually study in the way their own VARK result recommended — and for those who did, the alignment made no difference to their course grade. Scores in the VARK categories were not correlated with performance at all. What did correlate with the final grade were specific study strategies, such as using the virtual microscope, regardless of anyone's style.
Riener and Willingham put the summary bluntly in Change in 2010: “There is no credible evidence that learning styles exist.” That is a stronger phrasing than we would use — preferences plainly do exist — but on the teaching claim, it matches the experimental record.
Why almost everyone still believes it
Because the idea is taught, repeated and sold. Newton and Salvi reviewed the survey evidence in 2020 across 37 studies covering 15,405 educators in 18 countries, and found belief in matching instruction to learning styles running at a weighted 89.1%, with individual surveys ranging from 58% to 97.6%. There was no sign of the belief declining as the evidence accumulated — among trainee teachers it was 95.4%.
So if you were told at school that you are a visual learner, you were told it by someone who believed it, along with nearly nine in ten of their colleagues. The idea is intuitive, it flatters the learner, and the questionnaire feels like a measurement. None of that makes the teaching advice work.
What to do instead
The techniques with the best evidence are not about format. Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan and Willingham reviewed ten widely used study techniques in 2013 — elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, summarisation, highlighting, the keyword mnemonic, imagery for text, rereading, practice testing, distributed practice and interleaved practice — and gave a high-utility rating to exactly two:
- Practice testing. Retrieving material from memory — flashcards, past papers, closing the book and writing what you remember — rather than reading it again.
- Distributed practice. The same total study time spread across days or weeks instead of massed into one session.
Both earned the rating, in the authors' words, because they “benefit learners of different ages and abilities and have been shown to boost students' performance across many criterion tasks” . Highlighting and rereading — the two things students report doing most — were rated low utility. That is a far more useful thing to know about yourself than which of four boxes a questionnaire puts you in.
There is also a sensible version of the format question that survives all of this: match the format to the material, not to the person. Geography needs maps and music needs sound for everyone in the room, whatever their questionnaire said.
Learning styles, intelligence and IQ
These are three different claims and they get mixed constantly. A learning style is a preferred presentation format. The types of intelligence debate is about kinds of ability — Howard Gardner has objected for years to his theory being turned into a learning-styles inventory. And an IQ test measures something narrower than either: reasoning, verbal and numerical problem-solving, working memory and processing speed, reported as a number on the IQ scale.
None of the three tells you how you should be taught. A preference is not an ability, an ability is not a score, and a score is not a person.
