An attention span is how long you stay with one thing before your focus moves — and there is no single measured number for it, least of all the eight seconds you have probably been told. That figure has no research behind it. What researchers do measure is narrower and more useful: how often people switch, how detection fades over a long watch, and how much of that is the environment rather than the mind.
The eight-second claim, and why nobody can produce the study
You have met this one. The average human attention span has supposedly fallen to about eight seconds, which is said to be shorter than a goldfish's nine. It has been printed in national newspapers, built into corporate training decks, and used to justify a decade of advice about making everything shorter.
No peer-reviewed study is ever cited for it. It spread through popular media and marketing material rather than through research, and researchers at the Centre for Attention Studies at King's College London — who study this subject for a living — describe the claim as thoroughly debunked.
You can watch it happening on the search page itself. Google's own summary panel for this question currently answers “What is the average attention span of a human?” with “8.25 seconds”, adding that this is less than the goldfish's 9-second attention span — and the page it takes that from is the blog of an addiction-treatment centre. The number is being served as a fact, at the top of the results, from a source that is not research.
The interesting part is how well it survived being debunked. When the Policy Institute and the Centre for Attention Studies put the claim to a Savanta ComRes survey of 2,093 UK adults in September 2021, the result was:
- 50% said the eight-second claim was true.
- 25% correctly said it was false.
- 49% felt their own attention span was shorter than it used to be, against 23% who disagreed.
- 66% thought young people's attention spans were worse than in the past — including 58% of 18-to-34-year-olds, about their own generation.
A statistic with no source, believed by half the public, is a good reminder of how these things travel. Why a confident number outruns a careful one is itself a studied problem, covered in cognitive bias.
What actually gets measured: switching, not capacity
The number that deserves the attention the eight seconds gets is about 47 seconds, and it means something quite specific. It comes from Gloria Mark's observational research on how people use computers — not from asking them, but from recording what they do. The average time spent on any one screen before switching was about two and a half minutes in 2004, and has fallen to roughly 47 seconds in recent years.
Read carefully, that is not a claim that human concentration has degraded. It is a measurement of behaviour in an environment engineered to interrupt. Mark's earlier experimental work with Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke put a cost on those interruptions directly: the 2008 study is titled The cost of interrupted work: more speed and stress, and the finding in that title is the counter-intuitive one — interrupted work gets completed faster, and at a price paid in stress and effort rather than in time.
This distinction is the whole subject in miniature. How long you hold focus is largely a fact about your situation. A measurement taken in an open-plan office with notifications on is a measurement of that office.
The goldfish is not the comparison anyone thinks it is
The animal half of the claim is no better sourced than the human half — there is no nine-second goldfish study either. It also runs against what people who study fish cognition report: fish learning is a real research literature, reviewed by Culum Brown in Animal Cognition under the title Fish intelligence, sentience and ethics.
The clearest illustration is a 2022 experiment at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, published in Behavioural Brain Research. Shachar Givon and colleagues trained goldfish to operate a wheeled vehicle — a water tank on wheels that responded to the fish's movement — and to drive it toward a visual target on dry land. Whatever one makes of the result, an animal that can be trained to do that is not an animal whose memory expires after nine seconds.
The ten-minute lecture rule was checked, and it did not hold
The most quoted claim in education is that student attention collapses about ten to fifteen minutes into a lecture. Karen Wilson and James Korn reviewed the evidence for it in Teaching of Psychology in 2007 — note-taking studies, observations of students during lectures, self-reports and physiological measures — and reported that the research on which the estimate is based provides little support for the belief that students' attention declines after 10 to 15 minutes. Their other conclusion matters just as much: most studies had failed to account for individual differences in attention.
Diane Bunce, Elizabeth Flens and Kelly Neiles later approached the same question by measurement rather than review, using classroom clickers to have students report their own attention lapses during real lectures — How Long Can Students Pay Attention in Class? in the Journal of Chemical Education. The picture that emerges from this line of work is not a clean cliff at ten minutes but lapses scattered through a session and varying with what the teacher is doing.
Vigilance: the oldest finding here, and still the sturdiest
There is one genuine, replicated decline-over-time effect, and it is much older than the internet. In 1948 Norman Mackworth published The Breakdown of Vigilance during Prolonged Visual Search in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, work that grew out of the wartime problem of radar operators missing signals on a long watch.
The effect he described — detection performance falling away over a sustained, monotonous watch — is real and has been studied ever since. It is worth knowing because it is the honest version of what people mean when they say attention is limited: not eight seconds, but a genuine and measurable decline on a dull task held for a long time, decades before anyone had a smartphone to blame.
Attention span and IQ are not the same measurement
Attention shows up in cognitive testing, but not as “attention span”. Reasoning tests are timed and effortful, so someone sitting one while exhausted, anxious or repeatedly interrupted will score below their own usual level — which is a statement about the conditions, not about the person. This is also why the two most common hopes attached to attention training deserve separating. Getting better at holding focus is a real and worthwhile thing. Whether training one mental skill raises a general score is a different claim — the transfer question — and it is the part that usually fails; it is dealt with in how to increase your IQ. The same distinction applies to memory technique: a memory palace makes you better at remembering what you put into it, not better in general.
When a short attention span is a clinical question
Difficulty concentrating is one of the most common complaints there is, and the overwhelming majority of it has ordinary causes: too little sleep, stress, illness, a boring task, a device within arm's reach. None of that is a disorder.
Attention difficulties can also be part of a clinical picture — ADHD is the condition most people have in mind. That is a diagnosis made by a qualified professional against defined criteria, weighing how long difficulties have persisted, whether they show up in more than one setting, and how much they interfere with everyday functioning. An article cannot do that, an online quiz cannot do that, and neither can a reasoning test. If concentration has changed markedly, or is causing real difficulty at work, at school or at home, that is a conversation to have with a doctor.
